First day back on the open road!

Well, today was my first day of really riding on the road, and already I am feeling great. Rode about 12 miles, averaged almost 12mph, and hit a top speed coming down off the ridge of 42mph! I managed to climb the ridge without taking a break. I was also able to climb the hill back home, average grade of 9.2%. Had to take a break half way up though, not quite up to it yet. I saw my heartrate spike at 192 bpm, and my average was at 170 bpm,. If I average out the 3 different calorie readings I got, I would say I burned between 800-900 calories. My cycleometer which watches my heartrate as well says I burned 1110 calories! Not sure how accurate that is. Overall, a really nice ride, and a good test for the different seat. Verdict is still out on it. Time for some chocolate milk recovery drink.

This morning I weighed myself at 220 Lbs. Going to reallllly watch my eating the rest of the day. Gotta get these pounds off not only for my health, but to be more comfortable, and faster on the bike.

New Seat?

Well, 2 days ago a did a quick 30 mins on the trainer. Getting a little tired of it, wanted to be out on the road! Well I got my wish today, and more.

Today I took my bike in to Biketopia in Halls. Great little bike shop, and they helped me out a good bit. First, they loaned me a nice Selle Italia SL XC seat to try out for a few days.

I must say, it sure is nice! A lot nicer than the seat that came on my Trek. More freedom to move around on I, as well as staying where I choose. My old seat would like to slide me down into the middle of it, which would cause a fair bit of chaffing. Now I can feel my weight actually resting on my sit bones like its supposed to.

As well as fitting the test seat on the bike for me, they also set me up on a trainer and checked my seat height. Turns out, I was about 1 inch too low. Explains the knee pain I have been having. After the adjustment, my knees now feel more open, and like a lot less weight is riding on them directly as I pedal.

I was able to take it for a short 4 mile test spin after their adjustments, and boy what a difference it all made. Now I just need to come up with the cash to actually buy this seat. I am also currently working on a Jersey, and possible Bib shorts design for the tour. More to come with that later :)

Tomorrow is going to be a fun day. The temperature is supposed to hit a high of 67 degrees! I plan on doing a lap through Maynardville, and if I am feeling it, climbing the ridge. Only thing I am a little leery about is the cooler air. Todays quick ride triggered my asthma due to the cooler air at high speeds. I don't think I will ever be able to exercise outdoors during the winter.

Day 4

4th day of training, time to bump it up a notch! Current plan is to be on the bike every other day. Trainer is set at level 4 of 5 difficulty now, 40 minutes of constant 160 BPM heartrate, and 75-80 cadence. Focused alot on my riding form this time, trying to get the sit bones acclimated. Weight wise, I was kinda bad this weekend on my diet. Pizza, McDonalds and Hardees, didn't help me to loose any of my weight. At 219 LBS as of this morning.

This coming weekend is looking pretty nice, might be able to get out on the road and off the trainer. Will give me a good idea of where I am at, and how far I have to go to be ready in June.

Day 3

Had to let my butt recover a bit. I'm weighing in at 218Lbs now. Bumped the trainer up to level 3 of 5, and went for 45 minutes. I can't wait for the weather to warm up, so I can get out on the road!

Day 2

Day 2 of my training is here. My current weight is down to 219 Lbs. Been tough getting into a new eating habit  Have been able to hold to it ok I guess, with a few break downs. Each day is getting easier though. Really was eating soooo bad, all the time, in large amounts.

Did some adjustments to my seat today on the trainer. My sit bones were pretty bruised and sore from the first day. Today was alot more comfortable. 35 minutes, with the difficulty on the trainer up'ed from level 1 to level 2 out of 5. Got my heart rate pretty steady for 20 minutes at 150-160, with a quick 1 minute spike to 170 at the end. Legs are definitely feeling it, and boy does it feel good. Also making sure to drink a nice glass of milk, with some Hersheys chocolate syrup mixed in when done. Makes an excellent recovery drink!

Here we go

Started the training today. I have signed up for the 50 mile route. Could end up being as long as 60 miles though. Today was the first time I have been on the bike in any sort of fashion since August. About 30 minutes on the trainer, and I was ready to call it a day lol. Got some distance to go to be ready, but should be able to pull it off!

I am also working on loosing weight during this. Currently I am at 221 Lbs, my goal will be 160 Lbs, long shot to hit before the tour date, but going to do my best!
